Millicent Fawcett

In 2018, to celebrate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act that enfranchised women aged 30 or over (as well as all men over 21), Millicent Fawcett became the first woman to be commemorated by a statue in Parliament Square. Prime Minister Theresa May, and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, were among many people that took part in the unveiling of the statue.

Also inaugurated in 2018 was the Millicent Fawcett Mile – an annual one–mile running race for women. It's run at the same meeting as the Emsley Carr Mile, an invitation event for men that was first run in 1953.
